NTDET @Schools Virtual Classroom Initiative

Japanese via Virtual School

Music via Virtual School
Following the success of REACT at the Schools of the Air, the NT
Governement decided to expand its use into mainstream urban and
regional schools under its @Schools project.
It can be difficult to attract
teachers to live and work in remote and regional locations and even
harder to retain them. As a result, students living in these
locations are often limited to the subjects that they have access
to. Not all schools have teachers in advanced or specialist
subjects such as the sciences, maths, music and languages.
However, many students would like or need to study these
subjects.
With the deployment of REACT into
major schools such as Darwin High School, teachers can now deliver
lessons to their in-house students whilst at the same time
'virtually' deliver the same lesson to any number of students
living in any number of remote locations.
REACT provides all the tools a
teacher needs to be able to engage students in the real-time
classroom. High quality integrated audio and video enable the
teacher and the students to all be able to see each other and talk
to each other just as in a regular classroom. There is no
limit to the number of audios and videos that can run
simultaneously and no restriction on the video sizing. This
permits lively debates and discussions and allows the teacher to
enlarge any student's video to full-screen as required,
without loss of quality. In addition, audio is lip-synched
which is advantageous particularly when teaching languages.
Currently, music, languages and
philosophy are being taught in this way to students in many and
varied locations throughout the NT.
